 Photo by Autoweek Doing it with more than just gasoline, Kurt joined the team from West Coast Choppers during their succesful attempt at setting the land speed record using Hydrogen as fuel, as Autoweek was their to capture the event. Kurt first got involved with the project while he was with W2W, so the team called him out to support the run. GM High Tech magazine has done it agian, gracing the pages of their Mag with this Camaro built at Wheel to Wheel under Kurt’s direction.
Tech Center News, a local automotive industry paper get’s together with Kurt to talk about fuel economy in the performance aftermarket.
“The people who want the high-powered engines, still want them. But we’re doing a ‘69 Camaro now that will be over 1,000 horsepower, but also will knock out 20 miles per gallon” Force Fed Magazine is loves a cool boosted LS car, and this quarter, Mark Koehlers Firebird took it’s turn on stage.
Mark and Kurt Urban are already brainstorming a somewhat unique set-up for 2009 and Brain Tooley with Total Engine Airflow has also committed suport to help the new combo breath.
Check out Kurt building the SBC, for the Mule, which later becomes the grandfather of the pro-touring revolution.
“The engine I’m building is 400 ci to provide the maximum power potential in the small-block architecture. I have built small-blocks of larger cubic inches, but to go much bigger than 400 ci requires expensive custom parts and modifications to the block and other components, all of which I’m steering clear. That’s not to say the Scat crank and rods aren’t trick–they are–but they’re also sitting on the shelves of many speed shops, ready to ship…. Although the car is long gone, once upon a time Kurt and partner in crime Dave Henniger, were notorious for just what they were capable of doing with a 10-bolt rear end.
How strong is the 8.5-inch 10-bolt? Well, let’s put it this way: Both Dave Henninger and Kurt Urban run these 10-bolts (with spools) in their respective Camaros. Henninger has run as quick as 8.68/151 mph, while Urban’s Camaro runs 9.20s/145. Henninger has never broken a gear and has logged hundreds of runs. That should settle the question of durability. Kurt and the team from Wheel to Wheel built this Trans Am convertible with the dubious distinction of first to the 7’s.
“Meanwhile, Wheel to Wheel’s legendary engine builder Kurt Urban set about the work of building the baddest LS1 yet. Starting with a GM Performance Parts C5-R block bored 4.125 inches, Urban added a 3.625-inch stroke Lunati crank to create a displacement of just 387 cubic inches…. Recently we looked in on a dyno shootout Urban conducted featuring gasoline versus E85. The test mule was W2W’s standard LS2 crate engine, 402 ci with electronic fuel injection, Mahle 10.2:1 pistons, and ported cathedral heads. GM High Tech Magazine wrote this article about Daves Camaro, built by Wheel to Wheel with Kurt providing the design direction. The car has been upgraded since this article, but it is still pretty cool to see where it started.
